What If 18+ Hours of Complex Analysis Could Become One?

What If 18+ Hours of Complex Analysis Could Become One?

Jacksonville startup VetXpert Solution is building a faster way for the professionals preparing Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) disability claims to find the evidence buried across years of military and medical records.

A Veteran can leave the military with years, sometimes decades, of service behind them.

Those years can also leave hundreds or thousands of pages of records: medical visits, service documents, diagnoses, treatments and details recorded at different times and in different places.

Somewhere inside those pages may be evidence relevant to a VA disability claim.

But first, someone has to find it.

For the Veterans Service Organizations, Veteran-serving nonprofits, VA-accredited attorneys and claims professionals helping Veterans through that process, searching and connecting those records can consume hours before their experience and judgment can be put to work.

A Jacksonville startup is trying to change that.

VetXpert Solution is a Veteran-built VA disability claims preparation platform designed for the trusted VA-accredited professionals and organizations that already serve Veterans.

VetXpert Solution, with its millions of lines of complex coding, does deep analysis of military service and medical records, helping to uncover matters, connecting findings to the supporting evidence and preparing a structured VA claims package for professional review.

The technology does the analysis, capturing the right details, then organizing them. Then it autofills those details on the VA forms automatically and prepares and delivers both personal and “buddy” statements for any issue where the Veteran wants to provide additional information about the medical issue.

This capability is not meant to replace Veteran Service Officers (VSOs) and VA-accredited attorneys & claims agents; it was purposefully created to significantly enable them. With over 640K VA claims in the VA system and an undeterminable number of Veterans who have not submitted a claim due to their frustration and confusion about the claims process, VetXpert Solution can greatly help VSOs and attorneys in order to take care of those who have sacrificed so much on behalf of a grateful nation.

When 10 to 18 Hours Becomes About One

For VetXpert Solution co-founder Terrence Gorman, the problem isn’t theoretical.

Terrence is a VA-accredited attorney with approximately two decades of VA claims experience, along with his own military service as a lawyer. He estimates that working through the records of one 20-year military retiree, with no complex medical issues, can normally take him 10 to 18+ hours.

10 to 18 hours to work through one 20-year retiree’s records by hand.

About one hour for VetXpert to perform the record-analysis portion.

That doesn’t turn the professional’s entire job into a one-hour process. Terrence still reviews the findings, evaluates the evidence and decides what belongs in the claim.

But it changes where those hours go. He gets more time with the Veteran and sees fewer denials or appeals.

Ultimately, instead of spending much of that time searching through records, a trained professional can spend more of it doing what their experience prepared them to do: exercise judgment and serve the Veteran.

As co-founder and CEO Chris Budihas puts it:

“We are not trying to replace these trusted professionals; we are empowering them with an advanced and HIPAA-compliant tool. Additionally, and most importantly, the Veterans receive timely submission and adjudication of their disability benefits that they earned through their military service.”

Three Founders Who Know Different Sides of the Problem

VetXpert was built by three people who came to the problem from very different parts of it.

VetXpert Solution 1

Chris Budihas, Co-Founder and CEO, is a retired U.S. Army Colonel and former Marine with 36 years of military service, a disabled Veteran, and experience from across the military, business, the federal government and the Veteran community.

Tyler Rund, Co-Founder and CTO, is a retired Army officer, Veteran and software leader responsible for turning a complicated, document-heavy process into technology that can work at scale.

Terrence Gorman, Co-Founder and VA-accredited attorney, brings roughly two decades of VA claims experience and service National Guard attorney.

Together, they understand the Veteran, the complexity of the VA disability process, the technology and the professionals sitting on the other side of all those records. That combination also shapes one of the most important choices behind VetXpert Solution: the platform doesn’t make the final decision for the professional using it. Findings remain connected to the underlying evidence so they can be reviewed and verified before becoming part of a claim.

When you’re working with a Veteran’s medical history and benefits claim, speed only matters if you can trust what you’re looking at.

Now VetXpert Needs to Get Into the Right Hands

Over the next 12 months, this Jacksonville startup wants to expand adoption among Veterans Service Organizations, Veteran-serving nonprofits, VA-accredited attorneys and claims professionals, while building organizational and government partnerships.

That’s the next challenge.

The product is entering a field where trust is earned carefully. Veterans’ records are personal, claims have consequences, and the professionals preparing them are accountable for the work they put forward.

So the next important connection for VetXpert Solution is those VSOs and their leadership using the platform (they offer a free trial period to de-risk the relationship for their prospective client and themselves), a VA-accredited professional who knows exactly what 10 hours of record review feels like, or someone who can introduce the team to local, nonprofit, state or national Veteran-service organizations.

Because somewhere inside a Veteran’s records, the evidence may already be there.

It could be on page 20 or buried hundreds of pages deeper.

VetXpert is building a faster way to get the right professional to it.
